Louisiana follows the federal OSHA rule (29 CFR 1910.151(b)): no fixed first-aider-to-worker ratio, but where no infirmary or hospital is in near proximity the employer must ensure one or more persons are adequately trained to render first aid and that supplies are readily available. OSHA reads 'near proximity' as a 3–4 minute response for higher-hazard sites and up to 15 minutes for low-hazard offices.

Louisiana's Bulletin 137 licensing regulations (LAC Title 28, Part CLXI), administered by the Louisiana Department of Education's Licensing Division, require every childcare staff member to hold current pediatric first aid and CPR certification within 90 days of hire and before assuming sole responsibility for any child. All staff on the premises and accessible to children must maintain current infant, child and adult CPR and pediatric first aid.

Under La. R.S. § 9:2793, anyone who in good faith renders emergency care, first aid, or rescue gratuitously at the scene of an emergency is not liable for civil damages, except for intentional or grossly negligent acts. AED use is separately protected under La. R.S. § 40:1236.15, shielding prescriber, owner, trainer, and user except for willful or wanton misconduct or gross negligence.

Nurses in Louisiana are overseen by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing, which requires 30 board-approved contact hours every two years (or 900 employer-verified practice hours) on topics relevant to nursing practice. BLS is in practice an employer/hospital requirement rather than a licence condition, while ACLS or PALS recertification through approved providers typically awards 4–8 contact hours toward the CE requirement.

In Louisiana, home health aide certification (75 hours) includes first aid and CPR, and nursing-home and assisted living caregivers need healthcare-provider-level CPR (BLS) to respond to a resident's cardiac or breathing emergency. A recognized, up-to-date first-aid and CPR certificate meets this standard, in addition to the worker's occupational training, and must be renewed periodically.

In Louisiana, current CPR and first-aid certification is required of foster (resource) parents as part of certification, alongside pre-service training, a home study with safety inspection, fingerprinting and references. The Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) oversees foster parent certification and the related Child Placing Agency Standards, and the certificate must be kept current.

Online CPR and first aid training is recognized in Louisiana for personal, childcare licensing, and employer needs, with a 3-year certification validity. OSHA does not prohibit online training for the workplace requirement but recommends hands-on skills practice (OSHA 3317); blended training with a practical skills assessment is accepted.
